Why granite has to be sealed

Granite has been a very popular choice in especially kitchens due to the fact that it is heat resistant and one of nature’s hardest materials.  However, once you have granite tops installed in your home, it’s important to take good care of it.

Granite is porous and usually the lighter coloured granites are more porous.  This means that granite tops need to be sealed – luckily, our installations come with a layer of sealant which seals the pores found in the stone. This is done so that the granite doesn’t absorb the liquids which are spilled.  Even though we seal your tops during installation, we still recommend sealing your countertops every one to two years.

How do you know when it is time to reseal your counters?  When it becomes difficult to wipe spills up, or when the liquid does not bead up anymore.

Whilst it is possible to seal granite countertops yourself, we would advise hiring a professional to do this to enjoy better results.
